Brand refers to the historical novella TARAS BULBA written by Nikolaj Wassiljewitsch Gogol (1809-1852), one of the major writers of the 19th century. Originally published in 1835 as part of the collection of village tales called Mirgorod it got overworked and expanded with humorous elements in 1842.
