Brand got introduced in 1913 by R.J. REYNOLDS and was the first blended cigarette which represents the birth of the "modern" cigarette. The blend based on a pipe tobacco called PRINCE ALBERT which was launched in 1907 containing Burley (flue cured) and Bright (air cured) tobacco.

The photo shows the original dromedary called 'Old Joe' from the Barnum & Bailey Circus. This shot was reproduced exactly to design the Camel pack.

In 1923 it is the top selling brand in the USA with an incredible market share of 45%. In 1999 JAPAN TOBACCO acquires the non-US rights for the brand.
